This resonates with me so deeply. Thank you for putting words to something that so many people struggle to understand.
I think we often mistake a lack of capacity for a lack of willingness. We tell people to “just do it,” “move on,” or “try harder,” without recognizing that trauma, grief, addiction, and overwhelming emotional pain can make things that seem simple to others feel impossible.
After losing my son, I’ve come to see this in an even deeper way. I watched how often people expected him to simply get better without understanding what he was carrying. And now, in grief, I’ve experienced that same pressure myself. Sometimes healing isn’t about willpower—it’s about having enough safety, support, and compassion for our capacity to slowly grow.
Your words are a beautiful reminder that meeting people where they are is so much more healing than pushing them to be somewhere they simply can’t be yet. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt perspective. Your words beautifully reinforce Susan’s message that compassion and understanding can be far more healing than judgment. I’m so sorry for the loss of your son, and I’m grateful you chose to share a piece of your story with us. ❤️
